Happy Birthday Grindr!

Posted on March 25, 2011 by Grindr Team

Today Grindr celebrates its 2nd birthday. Since launching in 2009, Grindr has grown into a social networking giant, with over 1.7 million users in 190 countries around the world (only four small island countries left to go! Comoros, Kiribati, Nauru, and Tuvalu). As the world’s largest all male location-based mobile social networking tool for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android, and compatible BlackBerry devices, Grindr has brought together a global community of users, many of whom have made meaningful connections with the world around them.

Currently, an astounding 441,000 Grindr members log in to the app on a daily basis and spend an average of two hours using the app. Each day 5.1 million chat messages and 454,000 pictures are sent within the app. At the same time, 8,000 new users are joining the Grindr network everyday. In just the past year, Grindr has increased its user base by 50% and has become the top grossing Social Networking app on the iTunes App Store in the US, also ranking 56 for all paid apps in the US.

We want to thank all the Grindr users for using our app, helping spread the word, and making Grindr what it is today. Here’s to another successful year ahead!

Grindr Launches Mainstream App Project at SXSW

Posted on March 14, 2011 by Grindr Team

Project Amicus – Discover a new way to meet new people

Team Grindr is proud to announce the official launch of Project Amicus at SXSW, the codename and website for a new location-based mobile app that lets users discover, interact, and meet with nearby people. This app is for everyone – straight, gay, and lesbian.

Amicus, a Latin word meaning ‘friend,’ highlights the project’s social emphasis. The app will allow users to connect with other people based on their physical location and facilitate new social relationships. “Users love our existing location-based mobile experience, and we recognize the demand for a mainstream app,” says Joel Simkhai, who is leading the project. “We’re thrilled to continue harnessing the power of location to deliver a compelling new global platform that fundamentally changes and improves the way we meet new people.”

“Location-based services have transformed the way we see and interact with the world around us, but they have had less impact on how we make new relationships," adds Scott Lewallen, the project's creative vision. "With Project Amicus our goal is to develop that next step, making it simple and convenient to meet."

Project Amicus promises a fresh spin on the location-based social phenomenon, and will be packaged with an optimized interface that catalyzes human interaction. Users can expect a unique mobile app experience unlike anything currently on the market that caters to how women and men communicate together.
