19 Nonbinary Celebrities Shaking Up Hollywood’s Gender Norms

Genderqueer, gender-fluid, gender expansive, transgender, gender nonconforming — the gender spectrum gets more colorful every day. And every day, more celebrities proudly come out, proving you can defy the binary, even while in the public eye.

Nonbinary celebrities aren’t just existing; they’re thriving. Here are a few famous nonbinary people you should definitely know:

1. Lachlan Watson (pronouns: they/them)

Lachlan Watson is a nonbinary actor best known for their role as Theo Putnam on Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. At the time, Watson was one of the youngest nonbinary actors in Hollywood, landing the role at 17.

2. Asia Kate Dillon (pronouns: they/them)

Asia Kate Dillon is a pansexual, nonbinary actor known for their groundbreaking roles as Taylor Mason in Billions and Brandy Epps in Orange Is the New Black. Dillon made history by portraying the first nonbinary character on American television with their role in Billions. 

3. Nico Tortorella (pronouns: they/them)

Nico Tortorella is a queer, gender-fluid actor, writer, and activist. Tortorella played Josh in the TV series Younger alongside fellow icon Sutton Foster (who is neither gay nor nonbinary but an icon nonetheless). He also played Felix Carlucci in The Walking Dead: World Beyond. Tortorella is married to Bethany C. Meyers, who identifies as nonbinary and bisexual, and they have two children together. 

4. Jonathan Van Ness (pronouns: they/he/she)

Jonathan Van Ness, or JVN to those who love them, uses all pronouns and is a gender nonconforming and nonbinary multihyphenate, honey! Comedian, hair stylist, dog food entrepreneur — is there anything JVN can’t do? Although they’re best known as the grooming expert on Netflix’s Queer Eye, true fans know their best work was recapping the goings on in Westeros in their YouTube series Gay of Thrones. 

5. Liv Hewson (pronouns: they/them)

Liv Hewson is a nonbinary Australian actor and playwright who said naur to the gender binary. They began acting at a young age with a breakout role alongside THE Drew Barrymore in the horror-comedy series Santa Clarita Diet. They’re currently in Yellowjacks, further perpetuating the rumor that queer people love horror (oops, we do). 

6. Sam Smith (pronouns: they/them)

You had to know this one was coming. Sam Smith is perhaps one of the best-known nonbinary people in the music industry. Smith has multiple Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe, joining a long list of highly decorated queer musicians.

7. Amandla Stenberg (pronouns: she/they)

Actor and singer Amandla Stenberg identifies as nonbinary and gay. Maybe most known for their roles in The Hate U Give, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and The Hunger Games, Stenberg has never shied away from how they feel about the gender binary, saying, “I tend to believe that gender as we’ve set it up in current-day society doesn’t actually exist.” We couldn’t agree more.

8. Ruby Rose (pronouns: she/they)

Actor, fashion model, and DJ Ruby Rose is one of the most prominent gender-fluid celebrities, best known for their roles in Orange Is the New Black, Batwoman, and John Wick: Chapter 2. Rose made herstory in 2019 when she played the sapphic superhero Batwoman on the CW.

9. Indya Moore (pronouns: they/them)

Indya Moore is a nonbinary and transgender actor and fashion model who played Angel Evangelista in the legendary FX series Pose. Moore has also said that agender feels like an appropriate identity for them. In addition to acting, Moore is a vocal advocate for transgender rights, particularly for trans people of color.

10. Bex Taylor Klaus (pronouns: they/them)

A queer and nonbinary actor, Bex Taylor-Klaus began their TV and film career playing Bullet in The Killing. They’re also known for their roles in Arrow, House of Lies, and Voltron: Legendary Defender. They tweeted the news after coming out in person, saying, “Hi. I’m Bex, and the rumors are true. I’m v enby.”

11. Elliot Page (pronouns: he/they)

Still best known for their role in Juno, Elliot Page has gone on to create quite the career for themselves, from Inception all the way to The Umbrella Academy. In fact, their role in The Umbrella Academy was adapted to reflect their transition, a huge moment for transgender representation in media.

12. Brigette Lundy Paine (pronouns: they/them)

Brigette Lundy-Paine is an actor best known for Netflix’s Atypical and their role in Bill & Ted Face the Music. However, their best work might be their coming out post on Instagram, which read, “I’m nonbinary, always felt a lil bit boy, lil bit girl, lil bit neither.” We lil bit love you, Brigette!

13. Emma Corrin (pronouns: they/them)

Emma Corrin played Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown, a performance that earned them a Golden Globe Award. Corrin, who identifies as queer and nonbinary, has been open about their gender identity and challenging traditional gender norms to advocate for greater inclusivity. 

14. Janelle Monáe (pronouns: they/she)

In addition to being nonbinary, Janelle Monáe is also pansexual and occasionally polyamorous, making them the ideal celebrity crush for damn near anybody. Known for their award-winning music as well as starring roles in Hidden Figures, Moonlight, and Glass Onion, Monáe came out as non-binary in 2022, and the world has been a sexier, gayer place ever since. 

15. Demi Lovato (pronouns: they/she)

Demi Lovato has come a long way since their time on the Disney Channel. They describe both their gender and sexuality as fluid, proving you don’t need strict labels to top the pop charts. No word yet on Poot’s pronouns; only time will tell.

16. Bella Ramsey (pronouns: they/them)

It’s hard to decide whether Bella Ramsey’s most iconic role is as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones or Ellie in The Last of Us. If you can’t choose a favorite, just wait; this young nonbinary actor certainly has dozens more iconic roles to come. 

17. Sara Ramirez (pronouns: they/them)

Speaking of choosing between iconic roles, it’s even more impossible to decide between Sara Ramirez’s time as Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy and their performance as Che Diaz on And Just Like That… Callie is an icon — one of the longest-running queer characters in TV history. But Ramirez made history yet again as Che — one of TV’s first nonbinary characters played by a nonbinary actor.  

18. Emma D’Arcy (pronouns: they/them)

Before Daenerys Targaryen, there was her grandmother Rhaenyra Targaryen (even though House of the Dragon aired after Game of Thrones), and Emma D’Arcy brings the character to life. Although their HBO performance has received critical acclaim, they might still be best known for that whole negroni sbagliato thing that took the internet by storm. 

19. Bob the Drag Queen (pronouns: he/him/she/her)

Hilarious, beautiful, talented, and humble, Bob the Drag Queen is so much more than a winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race. This nonbinary queen has changed lives on HBO’s We’re Here and taken the world by storm with multiple one-woman shows, not to mention his tireless activism. The world is a better place with Bob in it.
